The Ultimate Maldives Luxury Travel Guide
From overwater villas with private pools to manta-ray dives and dinner on a deserted sandbank — how to choose the right island, transfer and atoll for a flawless Maldives stay.
The Maldives is the world's benchmark for barefoot beach luxury. Its defining feature — one resort to an island — delivers a level of privacy no mainland destination can match. The art of a great Maldives trip lies less in finding a beautiful resort (they nearly all are) than in matching the right island, transfer and atoll to how you actually want to spend your days.
Why the Maldives defines beach luxury
With around 1,200 coral islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, the Maldives offers something singular: a resort that occupies an entire island, so the only people you share it with are fellow guests. Add overwater villas with glass floors and private pools, house reefs teeming with life, and service honed over decades, and it is easy to see why it remains the pinnacle of beach luxury — and a natural pairing with a Sri Lanka or India journey.
The best time to visit the Maldives
The best time to visit the Maldives is the dry season, November to April, with sunny skies, low humidity and calm, clear water ideal for diving and snorkelling. The May to October wet season brings more rain and is greener and better value, and can suit surfers and divers chasing manta and whale-shark season.
Costs & practicalities
| Ultra-luxury rate | From around USD 2,800 per night at the top tier (Soneva, Cheval Blanc and similar) |
|---|---|
| Entry | A free 30-day visa is issued on arrival to all nationalities with a valid passport, onward ticket and confirmed booking; all travellers must also submit a free Traveller Declaration via the IMUGA portal within 96 hours before arrival |
| Arrival | International flights land at Velana International Airport (MLE), near Malé |
| Transfers | Seaplane (daylight hours only, roughly 6am–4pm), speedboat, or private yacht depending on the resort's distance |
Check your flight arrival time against the seaplane schedule — a late arrival may mean a night near Malé before transferring. A nightly Green Tax applies and is normally included in your resort bill.
Getting there & transfers
All international flights land at Velana International Airport (MLE), beside Malé. From there the journey to your resort is part of the experience — and the type of transfer is worth matching to the island's distance.
- Speedboat: for nearby resorts; available day or night.
- Seaplane: for resorts further out, flying only in daylight (roughly 6am–4pm); scenic but schedule-bound.
- Domestic flight + speedboat: for the most distant atolls, via a regional airport.
- Private yacht: the most exclusive transfer, on request.
Because seaplanes do not fly after dark, a late international arrival can mean an overnight near Malé before transferring the next morning — we plan flights and transfers together to avoid this.
The finest luxury resorts in the Maldives
- Soneva Fushi & Soneva Jani: the originators of barefoot luxury, famous for the “No News, No Shoes” ethos, vast villas, retractable roofs for stargazing and water slides into the lagoon.
- Cheval Blanc Randheli: LVMH's Parisian-elegant maison in the remote Noonu Atoll, designed by Jean-Michel Gathy — quiet luxury at its most refined.
- One&Only Reethi Rah: spacious villas and one of the country's best beaches, strong for families.
- Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi: three connected private islands with eleven restaurants, including an underwater venue.
- Also exceptional: Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru (marine biology, manta rays), JOALI and the wellness-focused JOALI BEING, Velaa Private Island, and Gili Lankanfushi.
Signature experiences
- A night in an overwater villa with a private pool and direct lagoon access.
- Snorkelling or diving with manta rays and whale sharks (Baa Atoll's Hanifaru Bay is a UNESCO Biosphere highlight).
- Private dining on a deserted sandbank under the stars.
- An underwater restaurant or spa experience.
- Sunset dolphin cruises and world-class reef diving.
How to plan your stay
Most luxury stays run five to seven nights. Two approaches work best:
- One island, fully: choose a single resort matched to your priorities — wellness, families, diving or design — and settle in completely.
- Two-island split: pair a livelier, activity-rich resort with a quieter, more intimate one for contrast.
The Maldives also pairs beautifully as a relaxing finale to a Sri Lanka or India journey. Painite Travels matches the resort, villa category and transfer to exactly how you want to travel.
Good to know
- One resort to an island: you choose privacy levels, dining and activities to suit you.
- Alcohol is served on resort islands but not on inhabited local islands.
- A nightly Green Tax and service charges are usually included in the resort bill.
- Modest dress and local customs apply when visiting inhabited islands.
- Reef-safe sunscreen protects the house reefs you will spend your days exploring.
